Jet is not a rock or stone. It is derived from coal, which previously was wood that had fallen to earth and been buried in subsequent layers of dirt. In this situation it is subjected to extreme pressure for millenia whilst buried. If you put a match to jet, it will burn. It is easy to differentiate it from black marble as it is much lighter in weight.
