Lena Boone

Lena Boone (d) was one of the most prominent and prolific carvers at Zuni Pueblo. She was the granddaughter of the legendary Teddy Weahkee and the daughter of Edna Leki, both of whose talents had been passed to her. She had a modest home at Zuni and was very hospitable to visitors. One of the things that characterized Lena's work was her use of new and unusual materials, from orthoceras fossils to gold slag and glass. Beyond her extraordinary skills and artistry as a carver, Lena brought a huge sense of humanity to everything she did. In addition to her daughter, Evalena, who often worked with her as a polisher, and her son, Leland, both of whom are accomplished carvers with growing reputations, Lena had provided shelter, comfort and guidance to numerous Zuni children. We were privileged to know Lena and to present her work through our gallery. We are saddened by her passing.
