Clearly, this is not a corn maiden, but it qualifies as a figural., representing a Navajo man. It is Zuni-carved from Zuni Rock by Freddie Leekya. Zuni Rock is material that has large deposits near Leekya homes and is carved almost exclusively by Leekya family members.
The artist added some touches like coral beads and turquoise strung on a necklace and a miniature “walking stick“ carved to scale.. The hat suggests a man of responsibility.
It was acquired in 2007 from the HandsOn Coop, an organization created by a cohort of Zuni artists with an outlet in Gallup, NM.
The carver has carved his initial as a hallmark on the underside of the right boot.
