Basalt is volcanic lava that has flowed across the ravines and gullies in the land at lower elevations. Then it cools over years leaving behind deposits of basalt.

It is hard enough to carve and very porous in its formation. As a result, it has a unique appearance when it becomes the home for an animal spirit.

Salvador Romero found some basalt that was extensively weathered, changing its color from black to brown, and carved this horse fetish animal from it.

We acquired it directly from Salvador Romero, a carver with whom we have had a long relationship. As our friendship has grown, we have watched his output become more refined with every batch of carvings.
